Somalia: Journalists Union Calls On Somaliland Region to Reverse Kalsan TV Ban

ALL AFRIKA

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) on Wednesday (July 24th) urged Somaliland regional authorities to reconsider their ban of privately-owned television network Kalsan TV.

Authorities in Somaliland officially banned the network from operating on Monday. Kalsan TV is based in London but has offices across the region.

“We urge the authorities in Somaliland to fully respect its commitment to media freedom and to revise the decision against Kalsan TV quickly,” said NUSOJ Secretary-General Omar Faruk Osman in a press release.

Somaliland regional Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance Abdullahi Mohamed Dahir said Kalsan TV lacks a licence to operate in Somaliland.

Nonetheless, the management of Kalsan TV believe the ban was prompted by a political debate they recently broadcast against the wishes of Somaliland officials.
