Three men from Rochester were shot and one was killed on Monday in Columbus, Ohio.

WHAM-TV reported that Omar Abdulkadir Ali, 25, Ali Abdulkadir Ali, 23 and Mohammed Deq, 23, were all shot as suspects attempted to rob the men at gunpoint.

Omar was killed. His brother, Ali, and cousin, Mohammed, both remain in critical condition, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

The shooting happened at 1:56 a.m. Monday outside a friend’s apartment building. Police were also questioning a fourth person who may have been in the SUV with the three men.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The three men were in Columbus to play for a pan-African team at a soccer tournament. All three were Somali refugees who came to Rochester several years ago, according to Charlsey Bickett, executive director of the refugee services organization Mary’s Place.

“These people came here to flee violence and war, and they end up in the wrong place and get killed,” Bickett told the D&C.
