Antonio Conte’s side surrendered top spot in Group C to Roma and now face the unenviable task of a trip to the Nou Camp in the knockout stages.

Tottenham, who earned the most points than any other team in the group stages, will face Italian champions Juventus, who finished behind Barcelona in Group D.

Manchester City, meanwhile, were handed a favourable draw against Basle, while Liverpool’s reward for finishing top of Group E is a last-16 clash against Porto.

Manchester United will face Spanish outfit Sevilla for a place in the last eight in the first round of last-16 ties since 2003-4 that will feature five teams from the same nation.

Monday’s draw in Nyon also produced a glamorous showdown between reigning champions Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

But the standout tie from an English standpoint will see Chelsea face Barcelona once more.

They have met 15 times before in European competition, with both sides winning five apiece and the other five ending in draws.

They have shared some of the most iconic moments in the recent history of the Champions League, notably when Fernando Torres’ late goal secured 10-man Chelsea’s spot in the final in 2012.

‘I think Barcelona is one of those games over the years that has not only produced exciting fixtures but also controversy,’ Chelsea secretary David Barnard told BT Sport.

‘We had our most famous victory at the Nou Camp when we went to the final in Munich (in 2012)… There have been a lot of interesting games we have had against them.

‘Bookmakers will probably make us the longest odds of any of the English teams but they should remember we have more players who have been there and done it… they shouldn’t underestimate us.’

Following the draw on Monday, Manchester City have been installed as favourites to lift the trophy. Swiss side Basle finished behind United in Group A and City chief Txiki Begiristain admitted: We are happy but of course we have to be respectful to Basle and the competition. We have to be careful, they deserve to be here.’

The five English clubs will take solace from the knowledge that one of Real Madrid or PSG will not be in the draw for the last eight.

Madrid have lifted the trophy in each of the last two seasons but their reward for finishing behind Tottenham in Group H is a difficult trip to the Parc des Princes. Director of football Emilio Butragueno was upbeat following the draw, however.

‘(Our players) always rise to the occasion, it’s a fantastic opportunity as well to play well and to show what they’re made of and it will be a very even, very exiting tie,’ he said.

‘These two games are probably going to be two of the best games football fans can watch at the moment.’
