Traditional elders from two warring clans in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region signed a peace agreement in Afgoye on Wednesday (January 28th), Somalia’s Garowe Online reported.

“The two sides agreed that Somali army and police be deployed in the areas where the clan clashes took place,” said Interim South-western Administration (ISWA) Minister for Reconciliation Abdulkadir Nur Arale, who read aloud the nine points of the agreement.

The two sides also agreed that clan militias in the area will be trained and demobilised.

ISWA President Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan and religious leaders and politicians from Biyamal and Habar Gidir clans attended a ceremony following the signing of the agreement.

Adan called on both sides to uphold the peace deal.

In July, clan representatives signed a government-brokered peace agreement after at least 40 people were killed and some 250 displaced due to clan clashes in Lower Shabelle.
