SAS troops are poised to strike at al-Shabaab terrorists inside Somalia after the country’s forces pleaded for help.

They will launch targeted attacks on the group behind the Kenya shopping centre massacre within weeks, defence sources said. The crack unit will join US and Kenyan special forces in a bid to take out al-Shabaab leaders and reduce the terrorists’ ability to trigger more outrages.

The move comes after Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud asked for guidance on how to “disrupt and dislocate” the Islamic extremists. The north east of his country is dominated by al-Shabaab and attacks in the capital Mogadishu are a daily threat. The SAS will have men on the ground to gather intelligence before launching attacks on
hide-outs backed by unmanned drones.

A source said: “Al-Shabaab is hiding equipment and concealing their key players from our spy-in-the-sky technology.” British special forces units are in Djibouti, north of Somalia, exercising with French and US forces.

SAS troops based in Kenya have already helped mount a “stinger” mission to snare terrorists as they try to slip back across the border into Somalia.
