A statement published on mcfc.co.uk read ‘Manchester City are delighted to announce the signing of Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina.

‘The 23-year-old Montenegro international will now join up with his new team-mates over the weekend.’

Jovetic signed for the Tuscan club from Partizan Belgrade, where he made club history by captaining the team at the age of 19, five years ago and despite missing the entire 2010-11 Serie A season due to a cruciate ligament injury, he became a key part of Fiorentina’s system.

He hit 14 goals as La Viola finished a disappointing 13th in 2012 but 13 goals helped Vincenzo Montella’s men to fourth place and the Europa League in the recently-concluded season, giving him 35 league goals in five seasons with La Viola.

Jovetic has also represented the senior Montenegro side since 2007, playing 27 times and scoring 10 goals.

He is reunited with former Fiorentina team-mate Matija Nastasic at the Etihad Stadium and joins Negredo, midfielder Fernandinho and winger Jesus Navas as one of City manager Manuel Pellegrini’s four summer recruits.

Jovetic is the fourth player bought by City this summer, following Fernandinho (£30m), Jesus Navas (£15m) and Negredo (£20.6m) into the Etihad, meaning their summer spend is closing in on £100m.

Negredo, also purchased on Thursday, cost an initial fee of £16.4m and up to £4.2m in add-ons according to club sources.

The 27-year-old Spain striker has agreed a four-year deal worth a basic £75,000 a week.

City moved one expensive player off the books yesterday when Maicon completed his free transfer to Roma.

The Brazilian flop cost £8m during his one season at the club, making just seven starts and six appearances as a  substitute following former manager Roberto Mancini’s decision to sign him from Inter Milan for £3m last summer.

Full back Maicon was paid £100,000 a week at the Etihad Stadium and would have ended up costing City in excess of £12m if he had stayed for the second year of his contract.

Pellegrini unexpectedly left the club’s tour of South Africa earlier on Thursday to fly home to Chile for family reasons.

Radio reports in Chile claim his elderly mother is ill but this has not been confirmed.

He is expected to rejoin his players in Hong Kong early next week and Brian Kidd will steer the ship in the meantime.
