‘Africa Together’ Press Release
The African Society of Cambridge University (ASCU) is pleased to present the first-ever event commemorating Africa Day in Cambridge, UK. The event will be held on 23rd May 2014 at the Cambridge Union Society, Caambridge University, UK and will be themed ‘Africa Together’. Africa Day marks the annual commemoration of the founding of the African Union (AU), which consists of 53 African states and aims to establish a platform through which African countries can address challenges on the continent together.
Africa Together will feature talks by African contemporaries across a range of topics, including fashion, media, gender, business and technology in addition to showcases of African music, fashion, arts as well as African food. There will be opportunities to network and meet potential employers working in and on Africa, as well as the chance to engage one-to-one with the guest speakers. Speakers include Sir David King, the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change and Science Advisor to the President of Rwanda, Amadou Mahtar Ba, Chief Executive of the African Media Initiative, Adama Ndiaye, award winning fashion designer and Lanre Akinola, editor of This is Africa, the Financial Times Magazine. With an expected 400 attendants including graduates, business organisations, academics and diplomats from across Africa, this will be one of the largest and most diverse events commemorating Africa Day in the UK.
ASCU has been working closely with several student societies from Cambridge University and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) to bring this day to fruition. The Africa Together team has created an event that promises to reflect the incredible diversity of the African continent. ARU Nigeria Society President said, ‘This event avails us the opportunity to discuss issues bedevilling the African continent and cross-pollinate ideas on ways forward.’ASCU President Johanna Riha added: ‘Africa Together’ is not only an event about showcasing the best of Africa, but also gives speakers a platform to share their achievements, inspiring stories and journeys, in addition to raising and discussing topical local and global issues impacting the continent. It gives speakers, many of whom are leaders in their field, the chance to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. It’s a day about celebrating Africa and coming together.’
